Our Cause

Island Prostate Centre

We are proud to be able to provide funding to Island Prostate Centre, and we’re relying on your participation. Pledges go directly to Island Prostate Centre (previously known as The Prostate Centre) to fund their much needed work with local families.

“As a prostate cancer survivor, I am delighted that the money raised will help support the good work done by The Prostate Centre. As I went through my journey with prostate cancer, I benefitted hugely from the nurse counseling program and support group meetings they provide.
I commend MAXIMUS Canada for sponsoring this event and the good work it does in our Victoria community.”
– Gerry McQuade

Currently, 1 in 8 Vancouver Island men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the leading type of cancer in men.

To support these men and their families, Island Prostate Centre offers a number of programs and services including community education, awareness and outreach, patient counseling and follow-up, collaboration and research and more. A not-for-profit staffed primarily by volunteers, Island Prostate Centre is the only centre of its kind in Canada.

Each year, Island Prostate Centre provides direct patient support to over 1400 men and their families.

In 2016, thanks to funds contributed by UrbaCity racers and donors, Island Prostate Centre also:

  • Expanded their twice a week Cancer Care Recovery Exercise Program to meet the needs of those new to an exercise program and those who are more experienced; and
  • Provided over 350 free PSA tests at the annual Country Grocer Men’s Health Day, helping to save the lives of 35 men who had elevated PSA numbers.

All of these programs, expansions and services help Island Prostate Centre ensure that men and their families in our community have the support they need when facing this disease.
