September is prostate cancer awareness month, and Island Prostate Centre has been keeping busy: the UrbaCity charity held a number of public events, including the 15th annual Country Grocer Men’s Health Day.
Men’s Health Day is the largest Island Prostate Centre public outreach event of the year, with volunteers on site to provide free screenings and information about the Centre. The event, held on Saturday September 10th at Tillicum Centre, provided free tests to 430 local men. Results showed that 27 of these men had risk factors associated with prostate cancer, and five were deemed high risk.
The doctor who volunteered his time has ensured that these patients were referred back to their family physicians for immediate follow up.
When detected early, prostate cancer is a treatable disease. Because of your donations and support for Island Prostate Centre, these men were tested early – they and their families now have the resources, knowledge, and time to seek care.
Men’s Health Day also goes beyond prostate cancer to screen for total cholesterol and other crucial health indicators. At the event, 156 men tested were shown to have elevated cholesterol levels, and were recommended to seek further medical assistance.
Also in September, Island Prostate Centre hosted a number of information and outreach sessions in the community, spreading the word about prostate cancer. Thanks go to Island Prostate Centre for the vital work they do, and for all our UrbaCity sponsors, donors, and racers, who help raise the funds to support them!
